What began as a simple roundabout reconstruction in 2013 was transformed into a living memorial, with its dedication on November 8, 2013, by then-City Administrator Jim Ryan.The circle's design incorporates historical significance, acknowledging the 529 soldiers buried in nearby Greenwood Cemetery, some of whom fought in the Revolutionary War. Plaques on each quadrant of the roundabout tell the story of local veterans' service and sacrifice from the Revolutionary War to the present.Since 2019, the Friends of Veterans Memorial Circle, an all-volunteer community group, has spearheaded a beautification project, planting thousands of annuals and perennials to create a stunning display of color from spring through fall. This transformation provides a welcoming and respectful environment for veterans and their families, demonstrating the community's care and gratitude. The project has become the biggest volunteer-driven beautification effort in Rockford and one of the largest veteran-appreciation projects in the Midwest.The circle serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Winnebago County veterans and a place for reflection and appreciation.
