Field Building: An Art Deco Masterpiece

Located at 135 S La Salle Street in Chicago, the Field Building is an iconic Art Deco skyscraper that has been a prominent feature of the city's skyline since its completion in 1934. Designed by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, the building stands 535 feet (163.1 m) tall and comprises 45 stories. It is also known as the LaSalle National Bank Building and Bank of America Building. The Field Building was designated a Chicago Landmark on February 9, 1994.The Field Building was the last major office building erected in Chicago before the construction hiatus caused by the Great Depression and World War II. The building incorporated many innovations for its time, including high-speed elevators and air conditioning. The lobby features a multi-level arcade that allows pedestrians to walk between LaSalle and Clark Streets and access retail space without exiting the building. The elevator indicator panel and mailbox in the lobby have an integrated design that resembles the building's exterior shape. The exterior of the first story is faced in polished black granite, while the upper stories are sheathed in limestone with vertically grouped and recessed windows.The building's location is historically significant, as the world's first skyscraper, the Home Insurance Building (1885–1931), once occupied the western portion of the site. The Field Building is surrounded by a vibrant urban landscape with shops, cafes, and parks. Nearby attractions include the Chicago Board of Trade, the Rookery Building, and Daley Plaza.
