Rockefeller Memorial Chapel: A Gothic Masterpiece

Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, located on the University of Chicago's Hyde Park campus, is a testament to the vision of John D. Rockefeller, who intended it to be the 'central and dominant feature' of the university. Designed by architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and completed in 1928, the chapel is a masterpiece of Late Gothic Revival architecture.The chapel's exterior is adorned with over one hundred stone sculptures by Lee Lawrie and Ulric Ellerhusen, depicting figures from the humanities and sciences. The 207-foot tower houses a 72-bell carillon, the second-largest in the world by mass, a gift from John D. Rockefeller Jr. in memory of his mother, Laura Spelman Rockefeller.The interior is equally impressive, featuring a vaulted ceiling decorated with over 100,000 pieces of colored Guastavino tile, designed by Hildreth Meière. Stained glass windows fill the space with soft, pastel light, complementing the intricate woodwork and sculptures. The chapel also houses a magnificent organ with over 10,000 pipes.Today, Rockefeller Chapel serves as a cultural center for the university, hosting religious services, convocations, concerts, and other events.
