Built in 1909, the hall is an example of Neoclassical, Classical Revival, and Beaux-Arts architecture, designed by Hewitt & Emerson. The hall was dedicated to Joseph B. Greenhut, Captain of Company K, 82nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, who personally donated approximately two-thirds of the building's cost. The exterior features Corinthian columns, arched windows, and limestone eagles. "Greenhut Memorial" is carved into the stone facade. Inside, there are six stained-glass windows, including one displaying the GAR emblem, and the GAR slogan (“Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty”) is inscribed in the main ballroom. A Civil War mortar from 1862 and a pyramid of cannonballs are displayed outside. The hall also houses portraits of Greenhut and his wife, a marble bust of General John Logan, and other Civil War exhibits.Today, the GAR Hall is owned by the Central Illinois Landmarks Foundation, which purchased and restored the building in the 1970s. It is available for rent for special events and continues to serve as a reminder of Peoria's history and the sacrifices of Civil War veterans.
