    Discover more about Cahokia Courthouse

The Cahokia Courthouse, located in Cahokia Heights, Illinois, offers a unique window into the early days of the American frontier. Constructed around 1740 as a French dwelling, the building exemplifies poteaux-sur-solle construction, a vertical log technique characteristic of the French Colonial period. In 1793, it became the courthouse for the Northwest Territory, serving as a vital center for legal and political life. The courthouse played a significant role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition, serving as their winter headquarters from 1803 to 1804. Here, they gathered supplies, corresponded with President Jefferson, and met with leaders to plan their historic journey. The building's history is as fascinating as the events it witnessed. Dismantled in 1901, it was displayed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis and later in Chicago. In 1939, it was returned to Cahokia and reconstructed on its original stone foundation. Today, the Cahokia Courthouse is a museum featuring exhibits about the French Colonial period, the history of the courthouse, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Visitors can explore three exhibit rooms and a courtroom furnished to reflect its 1790s appearance. Special events, such as the Fete du Bon Vieux Temps and the Old Time Music Fete, bring the site to life throughout the year. While the courthouse has an asphalt parking lot with designated accessible parking spaces, the sidewalks are cobblestone, and there is no ramp for entering the building.
