Discover more about Roann Covered Bridge

The Roann Covered Bridge, located just north of Roann, Indiana, is a testament to the town's enduring history and community spirit. Built in 1877 by the Smith Bridge Company of Toledo, Ohio, it's the fourth covered bridge to stand on this site, crossing the Eel River on what was once a trail from Rochester to Wabash Town. The previous three bridges, built in 1841, 1845, and 1856, all succumbed to floods. The current bridge is a Howe Truss design, measuring 288 feet in length and just over 15 feet wide. Its painted board and batten siding, along with the gabled roof that extends beyond the entrances, gives it a picturesque appearance. The bridge's construction involved prefabrication in Toledo, followed by disassembly, transport, and reassembly on-site – a common practice for the time. In 1990, tragedy struck when an arson fire damaged the bridge. However, the community rallied together, raising funds and rebuilding the bridge within two years. Today, the Roann Covered Bridge is more than just a historic landmark; it's a symbol of the town's resilience and a centerpiece of the annual Roann Covered Bridge Festival, which attracts visitors with tours, parades, and entertainment. Visitors can explore the charming downtown of Roann, which features antique shops, cafes, a pioneer log cabin, and a Carnegie Library.
