The Wabash County Museum District, established in 1991, is a treasure trove of local history located in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. The museum's story began with a voter referendum that created a museum district after the local historical society's museum closed due to funding issues. In 2005, the museum moved to its current location at 320 N Market Street, offering 12,000 square feet of exhibit space, archive, and a research library.The museum features 17 permanent exhibits and rotating displays. Visitors can explore exhibits dedicated to Brace Beemer, the radio voice of the Lone Ranger, the oil boom era, and the history of local churches. The museum also provides resources for deeper engagement, including a blog with historical stories and a shop with books and memorabilia. The museum's collection includes over 30,000 items, carefully preserved and cataloged.The Wabash County Museum District is more than just a repository of artifacts; it's a place where history comes alive through interactive exhibits and community engagement.

    The Wabash County Museum is located at 320 N Market St in Mt. Carmel. From the intersection of 3rd and Market Street, walk north on Market Street for about two blocks. The museum will be on your right. There is no cost for walking.

    Public Transport

    Wabash County Public Transit (WCPT) provides public transportation within Wabash County. To use WCPT, you must call 260-563-7536 between 6 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday, to schedule a ride at least 24 hours in advance. The one-way fare within the city limits of Mt. Carmel is $2 for those under 60 years old. Seniors 60 and older can ride by donation.
