Cattle Bank, Western Illinois Travel Guide

The Cattle Bank stands as a testament to Champaign's early economic ambitions and rich history. Constructed in 1858, this Italianate-style building was initially a branch of the Grand Prairie Bank of Urbana. It aimed to serve the booming cattle industry, providing banking and loan services to cattlemen who drove their herds to Champaign for shipment via the Illinois Central Railroad to the Chicago market.The bank's life was short, dissolving in 1861 after a mere three years due to the collapse of the local cattle industry. However, it holds a unique place in history, as Abraham Lincoln is known to have cashed a check there. Over the years, the building has transformed, housing a mineral water manufacturer, a drug store, and a grocery store before falling into disrepair after a fire in 1971.Saved from demolition and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, the Cattle Bank was renovated and found new life. Since 2001, it has been home to the Champaign County History Museum. While the museum's display space is limited, it offers engaging exhibits that showcase the history of Champaign County, from its early settlement to its development as a thriving community. Visitors can explore artifacts and stories that highlight the economic, social, and cultural changes that have shaped the region.
