The Dowling House stands as a testament to Galena's vibrant history as the first major mineral rush location in the United States. Constructed in 1826 by John Dowling, an Irish immigrant, this limestone building is not only Galena's oldest house but also the oldest stone structure in Illinois. Originally, the Dowling House functioned as both a family residence and a trading post. The Dowling family lived on the second floor, while the first floor operated as a trading post, the only one in Galena for a time, catering to fur traders and miners during the peak of the lead mining era. Galena produced a significant amount of the nation's lead in 1845.After the decline of lead mining, the Dowling House was abandoned for decades. However, it was resurrected in the 1960s and opened as a historic house museum in the 1970s. Today, visitors can take a 30-40 minute guided tour of the house, which is open seasonally from May to October. The tour guides share the history of Galena and the Dowling House, while you view artifacts from the early 19th century. The house features historically accurate furnishings, the original fireplace, a replica of the trading post, and a well-to-do 19th-century trader's living quarters.

Walking
The Dowling House is located at 220 Diagonal Street in Galena's historic downtown district. From the Galena Visitor Center, walk south on Main Street towards Diagonal Street. Turn right onto Diagonal Street, and the Dowling House will be on your left. The walk is approximately 15-20 minutes.
Public Transport
The City of Galena offers a free shuttle service from June through October on Saturdays (11 am-10 pm) and Sundays (11 am-4 pm) from the Depot Park and Meeker Street parking lots to downtown Galena. The downtown stop is on Green Street. From there, it is a short walk to the Dowling House. Jo Daviess County Transit also provides public transportation within Galena on weekdays and Saturdays for a small fee of $0.50 each way, but requires a 24-hour advance notice.
Taxi/Ride-Share
Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are available in Galena. A short ride from downtown Galena to the Dowling House will likely cost between $8 and $15, depending on the service and demand.
Parking
Parking is available throughout downtown Galena, but can be limited during busy times. There is free street parking, but it may be limited to 3 hours. Paid parking is available at the City Hall parking lot at 101 Green Street. All-day paid parking is available north of downtown on Meeker Street for $5 on weekends and free Monday-Friday.
