Discover more about Ujjayanta Palace

Ujjayanta Palace, situated in the heart of Agartala, stands as a testament to Tripura's royal past and cultural heritage. Built by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya between 1899 and 1901, the palace served as the royal residence until Tripura's merger with India in 1949. The name 'Ujjayanta,' meaning 'victorious' or 'glorious,' was given by Rabindranath Tagore, who was a friend of the Tripura royal family. The palace's architecture is a captivating blend of Indo-Saracenic, Mughal, Roman, and British influences. Designed by Sir Alexander Martin of the Martin and Burn Company, the two-storied structure features three prominent domes, with the central one rising to 86 feet. The palace compound spans approximately 1 square kilometer and includes public rooms like the throne room, durbar hall, library, and reception hall. The grounds are adorned with Mughal-style gardens, artificial ponds, and fountains. In 1972, the Tripura government acquired the palace and, until 2011, it housed the State Legislative Assembly. Today, Ujjayanta Palace functions as the State Museum, showcasing the lifestyle, arts, culture, and traditions of communities residing in Northeast India. The museum boasts twenty-two galleries displaying sculptures, terracotta, bronze images, coins of the Tripuri kingdom, paintings, textiles, and other historical items. Key exhibits include artifacts from Pilak, showcasing Hindu and Buddhist sculptures from the 9th to 13th centuries.
