Discover more about Shahi Burj

Shahi Burj, also known as the Musamman Burj, is an exquisite octagonal tower located within the Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Emperor Shah Jahan built this multi-storied marble tower between 1630 and 1640 AD for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Situated close to the Diwan-i-Khas (hall of private audience), it offers breathtaking views of the Yamuna River and the Taj Mahal. The tower's architecture showcases intricate carvings, delicate marble inlays, and precious stones, reflecting the opulence of the Mughal era. The floor is paved with marble to resemble a 'pachisi' board, a traditional Indian board game. Marble lattices with ornamental niches allowed royal ladies to observe the outside world unseen. Historically, the Shahi Burj is significant as the place where Emperor Shah Jahan spent his final days after being imprisoned by his son, Aurangzeb. From this vantage point, he could gaze upon his masterpiece, the Taj Mahal. The tower stands as a testament to the emperor's love and architectural brilliance, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich history and artistic grandeur of the Mughal dynasty.
