4.1

Sibuta Lung, situated in the serene Tachhip village, about 20 km from Aizawl, Mizoram, is more than just a historical landmark; it's a poignant reminder of a cruel past. This memorial stone was erected roughly 300 years ago by a Palian chief named Sibuta, and the story behind it is one of love, betrayal, and vengeance. According to local legend, Sibuta, an orphan adopted by the village chief, harbored a selfish desire to rule. He murdered his adoptive father to become the chief of over 2,000 houses. However, his success was marred by a failed love life when he was deceived by his beloved, a girl named Darlai. Enraged by this betrayal, Sibuta sought revenge by throwing Darlai into a massive pit. He then erected a memorial stone over her, a giant rock dragged from the Tlawng River, about 10 km away. It is said that three human beings were sacrificed, and their blood was used to wash the rock before Darlai was buried alive beneath it. Today, Sibuta Lung stands as a testament to this dark history, drawing visitors who come to learn about the Mizo tribe's past and the stories that have shaped their culture. The site offers a tranquil atmosphere, surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills, providing a space for reflection and photography. While the story is grim, the site is considered a sacred ground, with stone memorial pillars paying tribute to the ancestors of the Mizo people. Visitors can explore the area, engage with local folklore, and appreciate the craftsmanship of the monument.
