    Discover more about Gobindgarh Fort

Gobindgarh Fort, located in the heart of Amritsar, Punjab, is a living museum that vividly portrays the region's rich history and cultural heritage. Originally built in the 18th century by Gujjar Singh Bhangi, a local chieftain, the fort was initially known as "Bhangian da Qila". In 1809, Maharaja Ranjit Singh captured and significantly enhanced the fort, renaming it Gobindgarh after the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Strategically positioned, the fort has been a silent witness to pivotal events, serving as a crucial defense against invaders. Over the years, it has been used by various rulers and empires, including the Mughals, Afghans, and the British. Post-independence in 1947, the Indian Army used it as a military base until 2017 when the Punjab government took over its management and began a restoration project to transform it into a major tourist destination. Today, Gobindgarh Fort offers a unique blend of history and entertainment. Visitors can explore museums such as the Sher-e-Punjab: Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum and the Ancient Warfare Museum. The fort also hosts cultural events, including Bhangra performances and a spectacular light and sound show that narrates the history of Punjab and the fort in multiple languages. Key attractions include the Toshakhana (coin museum), the 7D show on the life of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and the Whispering Walls show. The fort also features a Haat Bazaar where visitors can purchase traditional Punjabi items. The fort is constructed with bricks and lime in a square pattern, featuring two main gates: the Nalwa Gate and the Keelar Gate. The Nalwa Gate is named after Hari Singh Nalwa, a famous general of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The fort also includes two bastions, Haathi and Nalwa, and a moat.
