Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib: A Wellspring of Faith

Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib, situated approximately 8 kilometers west of Amritsar, is a revered Sikh shrine with deep historical and spiritual significance. The Gurudwara derives its name from a unique well, constructed in the early 17th century by Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru of the Sikhs. This well, fitted with six Persian wheels ('Chheharta' meaning 'having six'), was built to celebrate the birth of his son, Guru Hargobind, who later became the sixth Guru.The well was not only a celebration but also a practical solution to water scarcity in the region, enabling the greening of the fields and bringing prosperity to the community. Although the original well is now covered, its water continues to be pumped into the Gurudwara's main tank, believed to possess healing properties.The Gurudwara complex features a divan hall with a square sanctum, topped by a lotus dome with a gold-plated pinnacle. Two 25-meter tall flag posts stand in front of the hall, displaying the Sikh flags, Nishan Sahib. The Gurudwara is managed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib is more than just an architectural marvel; it is a spiritual hub that attracts thousands of devotees, especially during Basant Panchami. The Gurudwara also embodies the Sikh principle of equality and community service, offering a langar, a communal meal served to all visitors regardless of background.
