Born in 1761, Akali Phula Singh rose to prominence as a general in Maharaja Ranjit Singh's army and as the Jathedar (leader) of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, one of the five Takhts (seats of power) of the Sikh religion.Akali Phula Singh was known for his bravery, his dedication to the Sikh faith, and his role in uniting Sikh factions. He was instrumental in incorporating Amritsar into Maharaja Ranjit Singh's empire, advocating for peace and preventing bloodshed between Sikh groups. As a leader, he was known to be outspoken and even challenged Maharaja Ranjit Singh when he felt the Maharaja had strayed from Sikh principles.The Burj (tower) and Gurdwara (Sikh temple) at this location serve as a reminder of Akali Phula Singh's contributions. The area was once known as Nihangan di Chawoni, reflecting its historical significance as a camp for Nihangs, a Sikh order to which Akali Phula Singh belonged. Nihangs are known for their martial skills and unwavering commitment to the Khalsa. Today, the site continues to be maintained in his memory.
