Qilla Ahluwalia: A Fort Lost in Time

Qilla Ahluwalia, located a mere 100 meters from the Golden Temple, stands as a testament to Amritsar's rich, yet often overlooked, history. Founded in 1759 by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, a prominent Sikh leader, the fort was strategically built to protect the Harmandir Sahib and the city. It was one of five main forts in Amritsar.Over time, Qilla Ahluwalia transformed from a military stronghold into a residential and commercial hub. The fort's original structure has largely disappeared, with local shopkeepers and residents now occupying the space. Today, it's difficult to spot, blending into the surrounding congested cloth market.Despite its diminished physical presence, Qilla Ahluwalia remains historically significant. It offers a glimpse into the turbulent 18th century, when Sikh Misls defended the region against invaders. While the fort's original architecture is mostly gone, some colonial-era structures, including decorated balconies and facades, are still visible. These elements hint at the fort's past grandeur and the layers of history embedded within its walls.
