Shalamar Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a magnificent example of Mughal garden design in Lahore, Pakistan. Constructed in 1641-1642 by Emperor Shah Jahan, who also built the Taj Mahal, the garden served as a royal pleasure garden. The gardens were designed as a Persian-style Charbagh, embodying an earthly utopia where humans coexist harmoniously with nature.The garden is laid out in a rectangular shape, measuring 658 meters by 258 meters, and is divided into three terraces that descend from south to north. Each terrace has a distinct name: Hayat Baksh (Bestower of Life), Faiz Baksh (Bestower of Goodness), and Farah Baksh (Bestower of Pleasure), representing Mughal romanticism and Sufism. The complex is enclosed by high brick walls adorned with intricate fretwork.Shalamar Garden is renowned for its elaborate waterworks, including 410 fountains that create a mesmerizing display. The fountains, made of white marble, provide a cooling atmosphere, especially during Lahore's hot summers. The garden also features five water cascades, including the Sawan Bhadon cascade. Besides the greenery and flowers, the garden boasts stunning architecture, including bathhouses, dining halls, and meeting halls.
