Gobindgarh Fort: A Living Museum of Punjab History

Gobindgarh Fort, located in the heart of Amritsar, Punjab, is a historic military fort that has been transformed into a living museum and cultural theme park. Originally built in the 18th century by Gujar Singh Bhangi, a local chieftain, it was initially known as "Bhangian da Qila". Maharaja Ranjit Singh captured and significantly enhanced the fort in the early 19th century, renaming it Gobindgarh Fort after the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Throughout its history, the fort has served as a military stronghold, witnessing various historical events and transitions of power. It was occupied by the British army after the Second Anglo-Sikh War in 1849 and remained under their control until India's independence in 1947. After independence, the Indian Army used it as a military base before the Punjab government took over its management in 2017 and began a restoration project to transform it into a tourist destination. Today, Gobindgarh Fort spans 43 acres and offers visitors a glimpse into Punjab's rich history and culture. The fort features museums, galleries, and live performances that showcase Sikh martial history and the treasury of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Key attractions include the Toshakhana (coin museum), Sher-e-Punjab (a 7D show on the life of Maharaja Ranjit Singh), and the Whispering Walls show, an ultra-technical light and sound laser show that briefs visitors on the fort's history. Visitors can also enjoy Punjabi cultural activities like Bhangra, Gidda, and Gatka. The fort's architecture is a blend of Sikh, Mughal, and British styles, reflecting the influence of different cultures throughout its history. It is built with bricks and lime and has a square shape with four gates: Lahori Gate, Amritsari Gate, Keelar Gate, and Phansi Gate. The main entrance is the Nalwa Gate, named after Hari Singh Nalwa. The fort also features a moat, ramparts, and bastions. Gobindgarh Fort is easily accessible from all parts of Amritsar by various modes of transportation. It is located approximately 3.5 km from the Amritsar Junction railway station and about 12 km from Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport. The fort is open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
