Discover more about Parashurama kunda

Parashurama Kund, cradled in the lower reaches of the Lohit River in Arunachal Pradesh, is a site of profound spiritual significance and natural beauty. This sacred kund holds a special place in Hindu mythology, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike to its serene surroundings. The legend of Parashurama Kund is deeply intertwined with the story of Lord Parashurama. According to the myth, Parashurama, on his father's orders, beheaded his mother, Renuka. The axe he used became stuck to his hand as a symbol of his grave sin. Seeking atonement, he was advised to wash his hands in the Lohit River. Upon doing so, the axe detached, and the site became known as Parashurama Kund. The spot where the axe fell is believed to be the source of the Lohit River. Each year, particularly during the Makar Sankranti festival in January, over 70,000 devotees and sadhus gather here to take a holy dip in the kund's water, believing it will cleanse them of their sins and bring good fortune. The Parshuram Mela, an annual fair, adds to the festive atmosphere, with colorful kiosks, local handicrafts, and cultural performances. The festival is also referred to as the Kumbh Mela of the Northeast. The original kund was believed to be established by pilgrims from Assam in the 1970s. A strong earthquake in 1950 shook the Northeast and covered the kund. However, boulders mysteriously embedded themselves in a circular formation, creating a new kund. Besides the kund, there are temples dedicated to Parashurama and Devi Renuka. The surrounding area, part of the Kamlang Reserve Forest, is rich in biodiversity and home to Rudraksha trees, adding to the location's peaceful ambiance.
