Moti Masjid: A Pearl in Bhopal's Crown

Moti Masjid, or Pearl Mosque, is a significant historical landmark in Bhopal, often called the 'city of mosques'. Constructed in 1860 by Sikander Jehan Begum, daughter of Qudusiya Begum, it embodies the progressive values of its time. Sikander Begum, a powerful and unconventional ruler, abolished slavery and championed women's rights, marking a golden era in Bhopal's history. The mosque's architecture bears a striking resemblance to Delhi's Jama Masjid, though on a smaller scale. Its white marble facade is adorned with two small cupolas, while two dark red towers with golden spikes flank the main structure. These minarets are not only visually stunning but also serve as a call to prayer for the faithful. The mosque complex includes three decorated gates, verandas, canopies, and a courtyard paved with sandstone. Inside, the main hall features white marble and a decorated archway, with ablution tanks and marble fountains on either side of the eastern gate. Visiting Moti Masjid offers a glimpse into Bhopal's rich history and the Begums' contributions. The mosque provides a serene atmosphere for prayer and reflection, away from the city's hustle. The best time to visit is in the early morning for a tranquil experience. A typical visit lasts about an hour and can be combined with nearby attractions like Shaukat Mahal, Van Vihar National Park, Lower Lake, or the Birla Museum.
