The State Museum Bhopal stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Madhya Pradesh. Originally established as the Edward Museum in 1909, it has evolved into a prominent institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing the region's history, art, and culture. In 2005, the museum was inaugurated in a newly constructed building with a contemporary design that allows abundant natural light. The museum boasts 17 galleries, each dedicated to different aspects of Madhya Pradesh's heritage. Visitors can explore thematic displays featuring pre-historic fossils, excavated materials, metal images, inscriptions, sculptures, royal collections, textiles, and weapons. Highlights include statues of Lakshmi and Buddha, images of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and Parvati, as well as paintings from various schools and copies of paintings from the Bagh Caves. The museum also houses ancient inscriptions, rare musical instruments, and a carving of two couples from Khajuraho. The State Museum's collection includes ancient works from the 8th to 12th centuries, Yakshini statues from around 200 BC, and a black granite Buddha. The museum also displays 84 rare Jain bronze articles from the 12th century, retrieved from the Dhar district of Malwa. The postage stamps and autographs gallery features the Penny Black, the world's first postage stamp issued in 1840.
