Taj-ul-Masajid: The Crown of Mosques

Experience the grandeur of India's largest mosque, a stunning display of Mughal architecture and Islamic heritage in the heart of Bhopal.

4.6

Taj-ul-Masajid, meaning 'The Crown of Mosques,' is a magnificent architectural landmark in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. As the largest mosque in India and one of the largest in Asia, it stands as a testament to the region's rich Islamic heritage. The mosque's construction began in 1877 by Nawab Shah Jahan Begum and continued by her daughter, Sultan Jahan Begum, but was not completed until 1985. The mosque's design is heavily influenced by Mughal architecture, featuring a pink facade crafted from red sandstone and adorned with three striking white bulbous domes. Two 18-story high octagonal minarets, each topped with a white dome, flank the main structure. The main prayer hall showcases impressive pillars supporting 27 ceilings, 16 of which are decorated with ornate, petalled designs. The marble flooring is reminiscent of the Jama Masjid in Delhi and the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore. The Taj-ul-Masajid complex includes a large courtyard with a central ablution tank. The prayer hall can accommodate up to 175,000 people, and the mosque also houses the Darul Uloom Tajul Masajid, a religious school established in 1950. Here, students learn not only about religion but also about modern subjects such as Hindi, English, and Mathematics. Visitors can explore the mosque's grand structure, intricate designs, and serene atmosphere. The best time to visit is during the winter months (October to March) to avoid the heat. Modest dress is required, and non-Muslims are generally not allowed on Fridays.
