Walking

The Shri Panch Pandav Caves are located approximately 2 km from the Pachmarhi Bus Stand. From the bus stand, you can take a leisurely walk to the caves, enjoying the scenic surroundings. The walk takes about 30 minutes. Follow the main road leading north, then turn left onto the road towards the caves. The path is well-marked and relatively easy to navigate.
Public Transport

Local buses and shared jeeps are available from the Pachmarhi Bus Stand to the vicinity of the Pandav Caves. The cost for a shared jeep is approximately INR 20-30 per person. The journey takes around 15 minutes. From the drop-off point, there is a short walk to the caves.
Taxi

Taxis and auto-rickshaws can be hired from anywhere in Pachmarhi to reach the Pandav Caves. A taxi ride from the Pachmarhi Bus Stand to the caves costs approximately INR 100-150. The journey takes around 10 minutes. Parking is available near the caves.

Nestled in the verdant hills of Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh, the Shri Panch Pandav Caves are a captivating historical site steeped in legend and natural beauty. These rock-cut caves are believed to have been carved around the 1st century CE and are associated with both the epic Mahabharata and early Buddhist traditions. According to local lore, the five Pandava brothers – Yudhishthira, Arjuna, Bhima, Nakula, and Sahadeva – along with their wife Draupadi, sought refuge in these caves during their 13-year exile. Each brother is said to have carved out his own cave, with a separate one for Draupadi. The caves are relatively simple in design, reflecting their use as temporary shelters. The most spacious and well-ventilated cave is known as 'Draupadi Kuti', while the darkest is called 'Bhim Kothari'. Archaeological evidence suggests that the caves also served as Buddhist shrines, with monks using them for meditation and shelter. Traces of an ancient brick stupa, possibly dating back to the reign of King Ashoka, have been found near the caves. The name Pachmarhi is believed to be derived from the Hindi words 'Panch' (five) and 'Marhi' (cave), further emphasizing the significance of these caves. Today, the Shri Panch Pandav Caves are a protected monument and a major tourist attraction in Pachmarhi.
