Semmozhi Poonga: Chennai's Botanical Garden

Semmozhi Poonga, meaning 'Classical Language Park' in Tamil, is a botanical garden in Chennai inaugurated in 2010 by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi. The garden was established to commemorate the classical status accorded to the Tamil language. Developed by the Horticulture Department of Tamil Nadu, the park is located on the site of the former Woodlands Drive-In restaurant. Spanning 20 acres, Semmozhi Poonga boasts over 500 species of plants, including exotic flora and indigenous species. The park is divided into eight zones, each with a unique theme, such as a fern garden, a butterfly garden, and an aromatic herb garden. Key attractions include an artificial pond, themed sections like the Palm Court, Golden Garden, and Butterfly Garden, and various aquatic plants and local bird habitats. The garden also incorporates elements of an Indian-Buddhist garden. Semmozhi Poonga serves as a cultural hub, hosting events that promote Tamil culture, including music and dance performances. The park is a popular destination for nature lovers, photographers, and families seeking a peaceful retreat.
