Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary: A Biodiversity Hotspot

Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Mungeli district of Chhattisgarh, is a significant wildlife haven and a key component of the Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve. Established in 1975 and declared a Tiger Reserve in 2009, the sanctuary spans 557.55 square kilometers of diverse terrain, featuring hills, valleys, and lush tropical deciduous forests. The sanctuary is home to a wide array of flora, including sal, saja, bija, and bamboo, along with over 600 species of medicinal plants. The Maniyari River flows through the heart of the reserve, serving as a lifeline for the ecosystem. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot Bengal tigers, Indian leopards, gaur (Indian bison), chital (spotted deer), sambar deer, wild dogs, and over 150 species of birds. Visitors can explore the sanctuary through jeep safaris and bus safaris, which are available from November to June. Night safaris offer a unique perspective, allowing visitors to witness nocturnal animals and experience the forest's sounds after dark. Nature walks and bird watching are also popular activities. For accommodation, options range from government-run forest rest houses to eco-tourism cottages like the Lamni Jungle Camp. The Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO in 2012, plays a crucial role in conserving the region's biodiversity and cultural heritage. The sanctuary also focuses on habitat restoration, anti-poaching measures, and community involvement to ensure sustainable management of its resources.
