Nestled in Jawahar Parbat, Darjeeling, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) stands as a beacon for mountaineering enthusiasts and a testament to India's rich history in the sport. Founded on November 4, 1954, by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the institute commemorates the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary. HMI aims to encourage and promote the art of mountaineering. The institute not only offers basic and advanced mountaineering courses but also houses the oldest mountaineering museum in India, established in 1957. The museum showcases a variety of exhibits, including models, paintings, sculptures, photographs, manuscripts, autographs, books, and mountaineering equipment belonging to famous mountaineers and local communities. One can also find the historic scientific equipment named Hitler's Telescope, which offers views of the Khangchendzonga. Sharing grounds with the Darjeeling Zoo, HMI provides stunning views of the Kanchenjunga range. Tenzing Norgay himself served as the first Director of Field Training at HMI. A visit to HMI promises an insightful mountaineering experience, enhanced by the picturesque location and the legacy of mountaineering history. The institute is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, except on Tuesdays.
