Discover more about Jhandewala Devi Mandir, Karol Bagh

The Jhandewala Devi Mandir is a significant Hindu temple in Delhi, devoted to Aadi Shakti, an avatar of Goddess Durga. Situated on Jhandewalan Road, en route to Karol Bagh, it stands as one of the city's oldest and most famous temples. The temple's origins trace back to the 18th century when a cloth merchant named Badri Das discovered an idol of Jhandewali Mata and a Shiv Lingam while digging near a waterfall. He then built a temple on the spot. The temple derives its name from the large prayer flags (Jhandas) that devotees have offered here for centuries as symbols of faith and devotion. Today, the temple houses idols of Goddess Saraswati and Maa Kali alongside Maa Jhandewali. The original idol of Jhandewali Mata resides in the cavern basement, referred to as “Maa Gufa Wali”. A replica of the idol was installed on the ground floor and came to be called 'Maa Jhande Wali'. The temple is managed by the Badri Bhagat Jhandewalan Mandir Society, a non-profit organization. It’s known for its spiritual ambiance and architectural beauty, which is especially enhanced during the Navratri festival when the temple is adorned with lights and flowers. During this festival, special pujas are organized, attracting large crowds. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 9:30 PM, with extended hours during Navratri. The temple holds various aartis throughout the day.
