Sunder Nursery: Delhi's Green Oasis

Sunder Nursery, a beautifully restored 16th-century heritage park, offers a unique blend of nature, history, and recreation in the heart of Delhi. Originally known as Azim Bagh, this 90-acre complex was built by the Mughals and has witnessed centuries of Delhi's evolution. The British later used it as a nursery to cultivate plants for New Delhi's avenues. Following extensive restoration by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Sunder Nursery reopened in 2018 as a world-class heritage park. Today, it boasts over 300 tree species, making it Delhi's first arboretum, and provides habitats for diverse bird and butterfly populations. The park features fifteen heritage monuments, including six UNESCO World Heritage Sites, showcasing Mughal-era architecture and intricate craftsmanship. Key monuments include the Sunder Burj, with its star-patterned ceiling, and the Lakkarwala Burj, a larger mausoleum. Visitors can explore meticulously recreated Persian gardens with fountains and water channels, a rose garden, and a large central square perfect for picnics. The park also offers amenities such as a café, children's play area, and accessible facilities for all. Sunder Nursery hosts cultural and environmental programs, including weekly organic markets, making it a vibrant community space.
