Satpula: Delhi's Ancient Water Harvesting Dam

Satpula, translating to 'Seven Bridges,' is a historic dam and weir constructed during the reign of Sultan Muhammad bin Tughluq (1325-1351) of the Tughlaq Dynasty. Built in 1343 AD, this structure was an integral part of Jahanpanah, the fourth city of Delhi, serving both as a water reservoir and a defensive fortification. Satpula's architecture showcases the engineering and architectural advancements of the Tughlaq period. The dam features seven arched bridges spanning a series of water channels, designed to manage water flow and facilitate irrigation. The structure is 79.5 meters (261 ft) long and constructed with stone masonry. Eleven bays with sluice gates controlled the water flow, with seven main bays at the lowest level. Pavilions at both ends of the Satpula were used as weapon storage. In addition to its role in irrigation, Satpula also served a strategic purpose as part of the Jahanpanah wall, providing defense security to the city. The dam regulated the flow of a stream, creating a reliable water storage reservoir that benefited agriculture in the surrounding areas. The stored water was also believed to have healing properties, with Sufi saint Nasiru'd-Din Mahmud reportedly using it for daily ablutions. Today, Satpula stands as a testament to Delhi's rich historical landscape. Recent restoration efforts by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have improved the site's overall view and environmental aesthetics, allowing visitors to appreciate its structural elegance. The site has been rejuvenated with treated water being channeled into the lake, creating a vibrant ecosystem. Visitors can explore the bridges, admire the unique design, and learn about their historical context.
