Discover more about Shri Vimala Shakti Peetha Temple, Puri

Shri Vimala Shakti Peetha, also known as the Bimala Temple, is a sacred Hindu shrine nestled within the Jagannath Temple complex in Puri, Odisha. Dedicated to Goddess Vimala, considered the tantric consort of Lord Jagannath, this temple is revered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India. These Peethas are believed to be the spots where parts of the goddess Sati fell to earth. According to legend, Puri is where her navel (or feet, according to some accounts) landed, making it a particularly holy site. The temple's architecture, primarily in the Deula style, dates back to the 9th century, influenced by the Eastern Ganga dynasty, possibly built upon the ruins of an earlier 6th-century structure. Constructed with sandstone and laterite, the temple complex comprises four main components: the vimana (sanctum), jagamohana (assembly hall), nata-mandapa (festival hall), and bhoga-mandapa (hall of offerings). The Archaeological Survey of India renovated the temple around 2005. Goddess Vimala is worshipped as a manifestation of Durga or Parvati and is considered the guardian of the Jagannath Temple. The temple is a vibrant hub of religious activity, especially during Durga Puja, a 16-day festival culminating in Vijayadashami. A unique aspect of this Shaktipeeth is the merging of Vaishnavite and Shaivite beliefs, with Lord Vishnu as Bhairav. Before any food offering can be considered 'Mahaprasad' and distributed to devotees, it must first be offered to Goddess Vimala.
