Discover more about Pandava Caves

Nestled in the verdant landscapes of North Goa, near the Arvalem Falls, the Pandava Caves, or Arvalem Caves, offer a glimpse into the region's rich history and mythology. These ancient rock-cut caves are believed to date back to the 6th century BCE and are named after the Pandava brothers from the epic Mahabharata, who are said to have sought refuge here during their exile. However, some historical evidence suggests they were excavated by Buddhist monks. The caves feature five small, hollow granite chambers, three of which contain shrines, while the other two were likely used for residential purposes. The architecture is simple, with plain walls, but reminiscent of Buddhist cave styles found elsewhere in India. One of the caves has a Shivalinga engraved with a Sanskrit inscription in Brahmi characters from the 7th century, possibly from the Bhoja King Kapalivarman's era. The caves also contain a 'linga' held in reverence by devotees. Today, the Pandava Caves attract tourists and pilgrims. The nearby Arvalem Falls and Rudreshwar Temple enhance the site's appeal, blending history, mythology, and natural beauty. Though the caves have faced weathering over the centuries, they remain an important part of Goa's cultural heritage.
