The temple's history dates back to the 16th century when the original temple was located in Margao. During the Portuguese rule, to avoid destruction, the deity was moved to Zambaulim. The temple's architecture showcases a blend of Goan and Hindu styles, featuring intricate carvings and a peaceful ambiance. The temple complex includes shrines for Goddess Chamundeshwari and Lord Shiva. The walls and pillars are adorned with carvings and inscriptions from the Bhagavad Gita, with some pillars depicting scenes from the Mahabharata. A Tulsi Vrindavan is also present in the temple premises. The Kushavati River, near the Zambaulim temple, is believed to have healing properties. Devotees believe that taking a dip in the river can cure ailments and purify the soul. The main festival celebrated at the Shree Damodar Temple is Shigmo, a Goan Hindu spring festival of colors that lasts for a week. Other festivals celebrated here include Navaratri and the annual Jatra festival.
