Discover more about Basistha Temple

The Basistha Temple, located in the southeastern corner of Guwahati in the Basistha area, is more than just a religious site; it's a tranquil retreat steeped in legend and history. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple was constructed in 1764 during the Ahom reign by King Rajeswar Singha, who also gifted 835 bighas of land to the ashram. The temple's history, however, stretches back to the Vedic age, with the ashram believed to be the abode of the revered sage Vasistha. The temple stands on the banks of mountain streams originating from the Meghalaya hills, which converge to form the Basistha and Bharalu rivers. The meeting point of these rivulets is called Amrutha Kunda. Pilgrims take a holy dip in the Vasistha Kunda. Legend has it that Sage Vasistha meditated here, and the site is considered one of the seven Shaktipeeths according to the Kalika Purana. A cave within the ashram is said to be where the sage meditated. Visitors to the Basistha Temple can explore the stone and terracotta sculptures that adorn the temple grounds and surrounding hills. The serene environment is ideal for meditation and relaxation, offering a respite from the city's hustle. The nearby Garbhanga Reserve Forest, home to elephants and a proposed butterfly reserve, adds to the area's natural allure. The temple is a major destination for pilgrims who seek spiritual peace. During Shivratri, the temple hosts grand celebrations, attracting numerous worshippers. The temple is generally open from sunrise to sunset. The best time to visit is during spring, especially from February to April, and during Shivratri.
