Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre: A Cultural Gateway

The Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre, located in Guwahati, Assam, offers a captivating glimpse into the region's vibrant culture and the mighty Brahmaputra River's legacy. Housed in a meticulously restored, approximately 150-year-old Scottish-style bungalow, the center stands on Barphukanar Tila, historically known as the 17th-century military office of the Ahom rulers. The center showcases the history of the Battle of Saraighat, regarded as the greatest naval battle ever fought in a river, and the heritage of Assamese war boats. Visitors can explore art galleries, a central hall, a viewing room, a river lounge, a meeting room, and a library hall. The attic features an extensive collection of indigenous and traditional musical instruments. The riverside garden offers a tranquil space with seasonal flowers and scenic views of the Brahmaputra. The heritage center also hosts cultural events, workshops, and talks, fostering a deeper connection between visitors and the river. Interactive exhibits and multimedia presentations vividly narrate the stories of the communities that thrive along the riverbanks. The center aims to be accessible to all, with wheelchair access to most areas and electric cart ferry service for the elderly and differently-abled. Originally built in the 1850s by Captain Archibald Bogle, the bungalow served as the Deputy Commissioner's residence until 2011. The architectural design, conserved and restored by Smita Makhija and Zia Hussain, reflects the heritage charm of the British era. Today, the Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre stands as a vibrant homage to the majestic river and a testament to Assam's rich cultural tapestry.
