The Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre, located on Barphukanar Tila (meaning Barphukan's Hillock) in Guwahati, Assam, is a captivating destination that blends history, culture, and natural beauty. The center is set within a meticulously restored, approximately 150-year-old Scottish-type wooden bungalow, formerly known as the Deputy Commissioner's Bungalow.The heritage center pays homage to the mighty Brahmaputra River and the significant Battle of Saraighat. The hillock on which it stands is mentioned in ancient scriptures as Mandrachal, and it was from here that Ahom General Lachit Barpukhan launched the Battle of Saraighat in March 1671, inflicting a crushing defeat on the Mughals. The Battle of Saraighat is regarded as the greatest naval battle ever fought in a river.Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing the history of the Battle of Saraighat, Assamese war boats, and indigenous musical instruments. The center also features an amphitheater, exhibition spaces, a craft shop ('Lahe Life'), and viewing decks offering panoramic views of the Brahmaputra River. The Riverside Garden provides a tranquil space with manicured gardens and art installations.The heritage center aims to provide an immersive experience, with QR codes in each room offering more information. Silent electric passenger carts are available to ferry visitors from the main gate to the campus. The center also includes a library and a café serving local delicacies.
