The New Flyover Bridge, officially known as the Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge, represents a significant upgrade to the city's infrastructure. This six-lane extradosed bridge spans the Brahmaputra River, connecting Bharalumukh in Guwahati to Majgaon in North Guwahati. An extradosed bridge combines elements of both girder and cable-stayed bridges, offering structural strength and aesthetic appeal.
The bridge aims to reduce travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati by more than 75%, cutting what used to be an hour-long journey to just 10-15 minutes. This makes commuting easier for daily travelers and opens up opportunities for development on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra. The project includes a 1.20 km flyover along the riverbank, connecting the bridge to ITA Machkhowa area. Noise barrier technology is incorporated to minimize disturbance to nearby residential areas.
