A Name Linked to Earlier Land Use

Chandmari is widely understood in local usage to preserve the memory of an earlier shooting or military practice ground, reflected in the Assamese term commonly associated with a firing range. The name survived as Guwahati expanded beyond its older riverfront and administrative core. Because the neighbourhood’s historical boundaries were informal rather than those of a separate municipality, accounts of its earliest development can overlap with neighbouring areas such as Silpukhuri and Uzanbazar. The institute, founded in 1920, became part of the technical and professional infrastructure that supported Assam’s modernisation.
