Discover more about Vikram Mahal

Vikram Mahal stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural grandeur within Gwalior Fort. Constructed in 1516 by Vikramaditya Singh, the eldest son of Maharaja Man Singh Tomar, it is also known as Vikram Mandir because it once housed a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The palace is located between the Man Singh Palace and the Karan Mahal. During the Mughal period, the temple was destroyed, but a Shiva Lingam has been re-established in the front open space of the Mahal. The structure features a Baradari, a pavilion with twelve doors designed to promote air and light circulation, with rooms on either side and a single story on top. Gwalior Fort itself has a history dating back to the 6th century. Mughal Emperor Babur called it the "pearl amongst the fortresses of Hind". The fort has been controlled by various rulers and dynasties, including the Mauryas, Sungas, Kushanas, Nagas, Guptas, Rajputs, Mughals, and Marathas. This has resulted in a rich repository of architectural styles and typologies. Today, Vikram Mahal offers visitors a serene atmosphere to explore history, architecture, and natural beauty.
