Discover more about Hussain Sagar Lake

Hussain Sagar Lake, a man-made lake commissioned by Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah in 1562, stands as an iconic symbol of Hyderabad, Telangana. Named after Hussain Shah Wali, who played a key role in its design, the lake was originally built to cater to the irrigation and water needs of the city. Until 1930, it served this purpose, but today, it is a popular recreational hub. The lake, often referred to as Tank Bund, links Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Bordered by Indira Park to the east, Sanjeevaiah Park to the north, and Lumbini Park to the south, Hussain Sagar offers a unique setting amidst the urban landscape. A 3 km dam was constructed on its banks to regulate water flow. At the heart of the lake stands a 16-meter high monolithic statue of Gautama Buddha on the 'Rock of Gibraltar'. Carved from white granite, the statue weighs 350 tonnes and was erected in 1992. The statue and its lighting are a major attraction. The lake is also surrounded by nearly 30 statues of famous personalities. Hussain Sagar is a hub of activity, offering boating, water sports, and a lively atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy speed boats, motor boats, and a 48-seater launch with dinner options. Other activities include parasailing and water skiing. The Floating Musical Fountain is a popular spectacle, and light and sound shows are held at the adjacent Lumbini Park. The lake is easily accessible from all parts of the city via local trains, buses, taxis, and autos. Nearby attractions include Birla Mandir and NTR Gardens.
