History of Ernakulam

From Coastal Village to Ernakulam

The mainland around present-day Ernakulam developed on the eastern side of the Kochi backwaters, with settlements, waterways and paddy lands connected to the wider port economy. The name Ernakulam is commonly linked with the Tamil form of the name of the local Shiva temple, although the exact linguistic history is discussed in different accounts. The temple became an important religious focus, while the waterways supported movement between the mainland, the harbour islands and inland Kerala. Unlike Fort Kochi, whose built character was shaped strongly by European colonial trading powers, Ernakulam grew as a mainland settlement with its own local institutions and commercial networks.

The Maharaja’s Administrative Centre

Ernakulam gained greater prominence under the Kingdom of Cochin as administrative activity and urban development expanded on the mainland. Public buildings, educational institutions and civic spaces helped establish the area as a governing and commercial centre. The Ernakulam Shiva Temple remained an important landmark, while the surrounding streets developed shops, residences and services serving the growing town. Durbar Hall Ground reflects this civic history: its name recalls the ceremonial and administrative associations of the former Cochin state, even though the surrounding district has since become a modern metropolitan centre.

Railways, Roads and Commercial Growth

The arrival of railway infrastructure in the twentieth century strengthened Ernakulam’s position within Kerala’s transport and trading network. Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town connected the mainland to other parts of the state, while roads and bus services brought in workers, students and shoppers from surrounding areas. Broadway and nearby market streets developed as dense commercial quarters, selling everyday goods rather than serving only visitors.
