Public Bus
From the Gary Metro Center, take the 'Dune Park' bus route towards Chicago. You will need to get off at the stop at 95th & Indianapolis Blvd. From there, transfer to the 'Chicago 20' bus heading towards downtown Chicago. After about 30 minutes, get off at the stop at North Avenue & Clark Street. Walk north for about 5 minutes to reach the Gold Coast area. The total travel time should be around 1.5 hours.
Train
Start at the Gary Metro Center and board the South Shore Line train towards Millennium Station in Chicago. The journey takes approximately 50 minutes. Once you arrive at Millennium Station, exit the station and head to the nearby 'State & Lake' L train station. Take the Brown Line train towards Kimball and get off at the Brown Line stop at Sedgwick. From there, it’s a short 10-minute walk to the Gold Coast. Total travel time around 1.5 hours.
Bicycle
If you prefer biking, you can rent a bike from a local bike share station in Gary. Head east on 5th Avenue towards the Lakefront Trail. Once you reach the trail, ride north along the lakefront until you reach the Chicago city limits. Continue on a designated bike path towards the Gold Coast area. It’s roughly a 30-mile ride and will take about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on your pace.
Walking
While walking from Gary to the Gold Coast is quite a long trek (approximately 30 miles), it is doable for the adventurous traveler. Start at the Gary Metro Center heading east towards the lakefront. Follow the shoreline north, passing through local neighborhoods and parks. This journey will take several hours, so ensure you are prepared with plenty of water and snacks.
