Car
If you are driving from Medan, take the Jalan Lintas Sumatera route (also known as the Trans-Sumatra Highway). Start your journey on Jl. Jend. Sudirman and continue onto Jl. Lintas Sumatera for about 170 km. Follow the signs to Parapat, and when you approach the town, you will see signs for Danau Toba. The drive takes approximately 4-5 hours depending on traffic. Keep in mind that you may encounter tolls along the way, so have some cash ready.
Public Bus
From Medan, head to the Amplas Bus Terminal. Take a bus heading to Parapat; several bus companies operate on this route, including ALS and Siantar. The bus ride takes around 5-6 hours and costs approximately IDR 70,000 - 100,000. Make sure to confirm with the ticket seller that the bus goes directly to Parapat. Upon arrival at Parapat, you can easily find local transportation to take you to the lakeside.
Taxi or Ride-Hailing Services
If you prefer a more comfortable option, you can use a taxi or ride-hailing services like Gojek or Grab from Medan to Parapat. This option is more expensive, with fares typically ranging from IDR 600,000 to 800,000. The trip duration would be similar to that of a car, around 4-5 hours, depending on traffic conditions.
Motorbike Rental
For the more adventurous, renting a motorbike in Medan is a great way to explore North Sumatra. You can rent a bike for about IDR 100,000 - 150,000 per day. Follow the same route as mentioned for cars, but be cautious as traffic can be challenging. Riding will give you the freedom to stop and explore along the way. Ensure you have a valid driver’s license and wear a helmet.
