Getting There

  • Public Transportation - Bus

    Start at the Ankeny Transit Stop located at 410 SW 3rd St, Ankeny, IA. Board the DART bus route 1, heading towards Downtown Des Moines. Ride the bus for approximately 25 minutes until you reach the 5th Ave & Walnut St stop in Des Moines. From there, transfer to bus route 96, which will take you towards West Des Moines. Stay on the bus for about 20 minutes and get off at the Walnut Woods State Park stop. The park entrance is a short walk from the bus stop.

  • Bicycle

    From Ankeny, head south towards the High Trestle Trail, which connects to the Des Moines area. Follow the trail south until you reach the junction with Walnut Woods Dr. Turn right onto Walnut Woods Dr and continue for about 2 miles. The entrance to Walnut Woods State Park will be on your left. Make sure to wear a helmet and follow local biking regulations for safety.

    If you are up for a long walk, you can start from the Ankeny City Hall at 410 W 1st St, Ankeny, IA. Head south on Ankeny Blvd (IA-69) for about 2 miles until you reach the intersection with 36th St. Turn left onto 36th St and continue until you reach Walnut Woods Dr. Turn right onto Walnut Woods Dr and walk for approximately 1 mile. The entrance to Walnut Woods State Park will be on your right. This is a scenic route, but be prepared for a lengthy walk of around 4 miles one way.
