Discover more about Old Fort Madison

Old Fort Madison offers an immersive journey into the past, recreating Iowa's first military fort, which stood from 1808 to 1813. This reconstruction allows visitors to experience what life was like for soldiers and civilians on the American frontier during the early 19th century. The original Fort Madison was established to control trade with Native American tribes and assert American influence in the Upper Mississippi region following the Louisiana Purchase. It served as a trading post where the Sauk and Fox tribes could exchange furs and lead for manufactured goods. However, the fort's location was not ideal, and it faced frequent attacks and sieges. Ultimately, it was abandoned and burned by U.S. troops in 1813 during the War of 1812. The reconstructed fort features several buildings, including soldiers' barracks, blockhouses, and a palisade wall. Knowledgeable staff and reenactors in period clothing bring history to life through demonstrations of musket firing, blacksmithing, and other daily activities. Visitors can explore the grounds, interact with the reenactors, and learn about the challenges and triumphs of life on the early American frontier. Special events, such as reenactments of the 1812 siege, are held throughout the year.
