Discover more about The Black Angel

The Black Angel, a locally famous monument in Iowa City's Oakland Cemetery, stands as a testament to love, loss, and enduring mystery. Teresa Feldevert, a Bohemian immigrant and physician, commissioned the 8.5-foot tall bronze statue by Czech-American sculptor Mario Korbel in 1913 to memorialize her son, Eddie Dolezal, who died of meningitis at age 18, and later, her husband Nicholas Feldevert. The statue's journey began in Chicago, where it was crafted before being transported to Iowa City. The angel arrived in Iowa City in 1912, but wasn't erected until 1918. Over the years, the bronze oxidized, transforming into the eerie greenish-black hue that fuels countless stories and superstitions. Some legends claim the angel darkens with each passing Halloween, while others whisper of curses and fatal consequences for those who dare to touch or kiss the statue. Beyond the legends, the Black Angel remains a poignant symbol of remembrance. Teresa Feldevert's ashes, along with those of her husband, are interred at the base of the monument, a silent vigil maintained over her son's grave. The Black Angel continues to capture the imagination, inspiring art, literature, and countless late-night visits to Oakland Cemetery.
