Driving
Stephens State Forest is located in south-central Iowa, with its units spread across multiple counties. From Des Moines, take Highway 5 south to Highway 34 east. Depending on which unit you plan to visit, follow local roads to reach the specific trailhead or campground. Parking is available at designated lots within the forest units. Be aware that roads within the forest can be narrow and visibility may be limited due to surrounding trees. There are no fees for parking.

Camping
Camping is available in the Lucas and Whitebreast Units. Advance reservations can be made through the Iowa DNR Parks Reservation System. Campsites are non-modern, with pit toilets and no electricity. Fees vary, so check the reservation system for current rates. One-third of the campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no fees for the five pack-in sites at the Woodburn Unit.
