Getting There

  • Driving

    Effigy Mounds National Monument is located in northeast Iowa, near Harpers Ferry. From Marquette, Iowa, drive 3 miles north on Highway 76. From Waukon, Iowa, drive 22 miles southeast on Highway 76. Parking is available near the visitor center and at the South Unit. Vehicles are not permitted past the parking lots. There are no parking fees.

  • Walking

    From the visitor center, several trails lead to different mound groups. The Little Bear to Great Bear Mound Group trail is a short, 650-foot walk. To reach the effigy mounds, you'll need to walk up a semi-steep hill to the top of the ridge. An accessible boardwalk trail into the wetlands is available near the Visitor Center for visitors of all walking abilities.
