In 1993, a spacious annex was added to house an expanding collection of historical items donated by the community, including military uniforms spanning from the Civil War to the present day, as well as antique tools and farm equipment. The Elkader Historical Society meticulously restored the Carter House to museum quality after purchasing it in 1983. The museum not only preserves local history but also hosts events and exhibits to promote awareness and appreciation of the past. The Carter House also has a reading room where visitors can relax and research the history of the house.
