The overlook is built on the location of the old steel bridge approach. A sign at the overlook commemorates the steel suspension bridge dedicated on June 9, 1932, which was later removed in 1974 and replaced by the Marquette-Joliet Bridge just to the south. Originally a toll bridge, the toll booth was located on the Prairie du Chien side, where a 90-cent toll per car was collected.
