Discover more about Villa Louis Historic Site

Villa Louis Historic Site, located on St. Feriole Island in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, is more than just a beautifully preserved mansion; it's a portal into the Victorian era and the lives of the Dousman family. This National Historic Landmark, operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society, invites visitors to explore the meticulously restored estate and discover the rich history of the region. The story of Villa Louis begins long before the Victorian era, with Indigenous peoples who inhabited the island over 2,000 years ago. Later, the island became a hub for fur traders, French settlers, and even free Black settlers. Hercules Dousman, a shrewd businessman, purchased the land in the 19th century and built his home on the site of former Fort Crawford. His son, H. Louis Dousman, and his wife, Nina, transformed the estate into a stylish country home, reflecting their wealth and status. The elegant Italianate-style mansion, completed in 1871, was later remodeled in the British Arts and Crafts style, showcasing the family's refined taste. Today, visitors can tour the mansion, admiring the original furnishings and learning about the Dousman family's impact on Wisconsin's development. The 25-acre estate also includes other historic structures, such as the Brisbois House, the Rolette House, and a fur trade museum, offering a comprehensive glimpse into the past. Villa Louis offers a variety of experiences, including guided tours led by costumed interpreters, special events, and educational programs. Visitors can explore the gardens, stroll along the riverfront, and imagine life in the late 19th century. The site also hosts reenactments and other events that bring history to life.
