The Remains of Talsam Gate stand as a poignant reminder of Baghdad's storied past, inviting tourists to delve into the rich history and culture of this ancient city. Once a majestic entryway, Talsam Gate is a historical landmark that has witnessed centuries of change, embodying the architectural and cultural narratives of its time. Originally known as Bab al-Halba (the White Gate), it was expanded and restored in 1220 by Caliph al-Nasir. The gate was adorned with decorative friezes and inscriptions. The inscription on the gate depicts two knotted serpents or dragons who are being held by a seated figure who is believed to be the Caliph himself. The inscription became known for being talismanic among the people of Baghdad as it was believed to give protection against Baghdad's enemies. Due to this, the gate later gained its more well-known name of Bab al-Talsim. The gate was destroyed by Ottoman troops in 1917 during their withdrawal from Baghdad, to prevent it from being turned into a warehouse. Despite its destruction, the remains offer a serene space for reflection amidst the bustling life of modern Baghdad. Visitors can appreciate the strategic location and immerse themselves in the local culture, with nearby markets and eateries adding depth to the experience. The detailed carvings and stonework are remnants of a bygone era, showcasing the artistry of ancient builders.
